Celebrate Australia day with 15% off our Aussie range

We’re marking the New Year by celebrating Australia day with a 15% discount across our entire Aussie range. We’ll also be toasting the heroic efforts of the England cricket team with some of Australia’s best wines.

For fans of the likes of John Quarisa, Phil Sexton, Blackjack, Stella Bella, Jansz, Rusden and Domaine A, it’s your lucky day. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, these really are some of the best producers in Australia, a country that offers superb value for money and so much more than the flabby, factory wines on the High Street.

It’s also a fantastic chance to grab yourself some Little Creatures Pale Ale for less than it costs down under! This is the only beer we sell and we think it one of finest on the planet. Hundreds of you evidently agree.

Order now and save 15% [use voucher code ‘AUS2011’]

Australia day is on the 26th but we’ll be running this promotion throughout January.

Don't forget that delivery is just £7.99 per order – no matter how much wine or beer you buy.

What's more, for every penny you spend at Wineaux, we’ll credit your Winebank account with points to redeem against your next order. If you've ordered since November, you've already started collecting Winebank points - cash them in now or keep saving for something special: log-in to your account to check your balance.

酒 Serious about sake... as in /'sa:ki:/

Congratulations to Wineaux MD and buyer Barry McCaughley who has just added the tile of official Sake Sommelier to an already impressive CV. In gaining the qualification Barry joins a select group of only 2,500 people worldwide to be recognised by the Sake Sommelier Association. The intensive course covered all aspects of sake tasting, food matching and serving.

While many people instinctively feel that Sake is just a novelty product best left to Japanese restaurants or Karaoke bars, there's a whole lot more to it than that. It's actually a very serious drink with complexities and nuances that compare similarly with wine. Its fantastic with food too.
So watch this space for some super-premium Sake coming your way. In the meantime, if we can be of any assistance on the Sake-front, just drop us a line.

Great wines for under £10

Here at Wineaux we cater for every palate and occasion. We’re currently holding some 25 wines in the sub-£10 category: red and white, rosé and sparkling, old world and new. As always, these are all top quality wines for their price point, many from our best wineries.
From Burgundy, Cotes du Rhone, Corbieres, Albarino, Rioja and Nero D’Avola, to the best of the new world – there really is something for everyone here (good age on some of these wines too).
Remember: in terms of quality it’s almost always better to go for a value option from a top winery than to expect value from a mass-market producer. Some of our sub-£10 wines are made in quantities less than 10,000 cases (by way of comparison, someone like Concha y Toro produces close to 30 million cases per year!)

More accolades for the Wineaux range: Decanter World Wine Awards 2010

Following the incredible success of Castello Romitorio at the International Wine Challenge (see previous post), we were equally pleased to see wines and producers from our exclusive range doing well at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards, the results of which have just been published.

JustNat's Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (about which more in the next Wineaux News) picked up a bronze medal in the highly competitive best USA red category.

Domaine des Malandes Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2008 also picked up a bronze in the best French white competition.

* Akarua's 'The Gulllies' Pinot Noir 2007 was awarded a silver in the best New Zealand red wine category (we sell the 2003, which has really developed in the bottle).

RJ Vinedos Bonarda 2007 was a Regional Trophy winner in the best Argentinian red (over £10) category (we're currently holding the equally delicious 2006).

Castello Romitorio wins IWC Grand Trophy

The wine industry is built on praise. Take us, for example: we’re always telling you how good our wine is. We know we’re right because of the feedback we get from our customers, and that’s the most important thing to us.

But we have to feel pleased with ourselves when the wines we’ve selected for you win prestigious awards. And they don’t come much more prestigious than the International Wine Challenge Champion Trophy.

Judged blind by 15 Masters of Wine, the Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2004 from our very own Castello del Romitorio was judged the best red wine at the entire IWC (not bad from over 15,000 entries). Naturally it also collected Best Italian Red Wine and Best Tuscan Red Wine.

The IWC Judges described it as “Deep, intense and slightly brooding on the nose: leather, hints of tobacco and violets. Red fruits dominate on the palate”. Robert Parker also rates the wine as superb (96 points).

So a big well done to all at Castello Romitorio! We’ve always believed it to be some of the best Tuscan wine available in the UK, throughout the range. We can’t recommend these wines highly enough – on their own or with food (be sure to decant the bigger Sangioveses).

We’re no longer the listing the Grand Trophy winning Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva 2004 on the website as there’s too little of it left (total production was only 6,600 bottles). But we should still have enough for those who want some: a case of 6 bottles is £500 (just phone or mail your orders through). You can read Romitorio’s notes here, or check out the IWC awards here.

At half the price, the Castello Romitorio Brunello DOCG 2003 is a great alternative to the 2004.

The best of Burgundy

The vineyards of Burgundy are responsible for the very finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnaythat the world has to offer. Such wines are hand-made in very small quantities and are hard to find in the UK, which is why we're rather proud of our new Burgundy range.

Since 2005 we’ve been to Burgundy at least twice a year, tasting wines, meticulously recording and comparing what we drank, and building relationships with the best producers.
The result: 18 stunning wines offering the very best of Burgundy at every price point (sub-£10 to £150+).
From Chablis to the Maconnais – via the likes of Saint Veran, Morey St. Denis, Meursault, Puligny Montrachet and Corton Charlemagne – we’ve bought some the best appellations, varietals and grades, including four Grand Cru Chardonnays.
Strictly limited availability: when it’s gone, it’s gone forever: buy now.
If you don't know Burgundy, it can be quite daunting- any questions, feel free to get in touch and we'll be more than happy to advise on wines best suited to your tastes.
